Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “It is well for you, Simon Barjona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.
And now I say to you: You are Peter; and on this Rock I will build my Church; and never will the powers of death overcome it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you unbind on earth shall be unbound in heaven.”
REFLECTION:
Today’s feast is a call to the figure of Peter and his role of teaching and preaching (as symbolized by the Chair). In the plan of the Lord,
the task is clear: Peter is called to become a teacher and a guardian, a reference point for the brothers and sisters in the early Church.
The task of Peter is to keep the faith, guard it,
and preserve it from subjective and individualistic interpretations that are not faithful to the message of Christ so that today we have the certainty that what we believe is exactly that which for more than two thousand years the Church experienced and announced.
The chair of Peter is the symbol of Christ’ mission given to the apostles in which Peter was the leader.
It becomes the rock which holds the Church together as she journeys through uncertain times. We celebrate the unity of the faith kept creatively by Peter,
the unity of the universal Church in its mission to continue the work of the Lord.
