What does it profit you to gain the whole world, if you destroy or damage yourself?
REFLECTION:
Lent is a time to look into the essentials and rediscover our own vocation in life. Most of us associate Lent with acts of mortification and renunciation.
If we do such acts, it is to make us at the end of Lent more alive and active not mortified.
Today, Jesus asks us to take up our cross and follow him. To carry the cross means to “lose face”. In Jesus’ time,
the cross was the most shameful humiliation that could ever happen to a person both for Roman citizens and Jews.
To deny one self and carry the cross means to love the Lord to the point that we don’t mind losing our face for him and then follow him since there is no one and nothing else worth more than Him.
In this season of Lent, Jesus invites us to rediscover that he is everything, the absolute, the fullness, and the only love that can fill our every desire.
He challenges us to discover that in a world in which everyone talks about self-realization, the only thing that matters is to lose one’s self for love of Him and of our neighbor.
