Sidon, the people there would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I assure you, for Tyre and Sidon it will
be more bearable on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? You will be thrown
down to the place of the dead! For if the miracles which were performed in you had taken place in Sodom, it would still be
there today! But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Reflection:
Those who heard the word of God and rejected it have more
responsibility regarding their hard headedness than those who have not
heard it. It is because they are already tainted with the sin of knowledge.
Once they know about God’s word, a decision must be made. Rejection
means rejection of God’s effort to save them. It is not therefore God who choose
our punishment. It is of our own making. Sometimes we forget about this aspect
of our fate. We blame it all on God as if God is the one who shapes our life.
We are all products of the choices we make. And so, today God lays before us
two choices, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now
choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord
your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him (Deut. 30,19-20)
