For he will not speak of his own authority, but will speak what he hears, and he will tell you about
the things which are to come. He will take what is mine and make it known to you; in doing this,
he will glorify me. All that the Father has is mine; for this reason, I told you that the Spirit will
take what is mine, and make it known to you.
Reflect
Paul speaks to the Athenians about their worship of “an unknown God.” The Athenians wanted
to make sure they had all their bases covered so that no god would be displeased with
them. But we do not worship a God that we do not know. God revealed himself to us in
many ways: in his creation, in his Church, in his sacraments, and most especially, in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, helps us to discern God’s presence and action in our lives.
How can we remain attentive to God’s presence and come to know him better?
We can read Scripture in which God revealed himself and his divine plan for us. We can learn
what the Church teaches by reading the Catechism, the letters of the Popes, and other spiritual
writings, by attending classes, and listening to good preaching. We can participate fruitfully
in the Mass, coming to know Christ in the Eucharist. We can come to know Christ by seeing
him in our brothers and sisters and offering them loving service. We have no need to
worship an unknown God.
